Some wedding venues are beautiful. Others give the entire day a sense of history. The Southwest School of Art in San Antonio does both.
From its limestone walls and sunlit courtyards to the old oak trees overlooking the San Antonio River, the property feels deeply rooted in its surroundings. From the moment Ella and Jack booked me for their Southwest School of Art wedding, I knew the venue would bring so much character to their celebration.
Ella and Jack’s wedding unfolded on a beautiful summer day in downtown San Antonio. Their celebration was filled with thoughtful nods to Texas culture, genuine emotion and the kind of joy that never felt forced.
Every part of the day felt connected to the city around them. The historic architecture gave their portraits a timeless quality, while the river created the setting for one of the most unforgettable endings to a wedding day I have ever photographed.
Ella and Jack exchanged vows inside Coates Chapel, one of the most distinctive ceremony spaces at the Southwest School of Art.
Natural light poured through the chapel’s tall windows, illuminating the historic stonework and giving the room a quiet, reverent feeling. It is the kind of space that does not need much added to it. The architecture already carries so much beauty and presence of its own.
I photographed their wedding using both film and digital photography, allowing me to preserve the softness of the chapel light alongside every candid expression and fleeting moment. The combination felt especially fitting for a celebration with such a timeless setting.
Ella and Jack first met in high school, but what stood out most was not simply how long they had known one another. It was the ease between them.
There was a familiarity in the way they moved together and an unspoken understanding in the way they looked at each other. Their relationship felt steady, joyful and deeply lived in. It was clear that this wedding was not the beginning of their story, but the celebration of one they had already been building for years.
At the heart of the day was Ella’s Mimi, the beloved matriarch of the family. You could feel how deeply everyone was connected to her. That love carried through the toasts, the embraces and the quieter moments that unfolded throughout the evening.
Her presence gave the celebration another layer of meaning. This was not only a wedding between two people. It was a gathering shaped by family history, shared memories and generations of love.
As evening settled in, guests gathered for a candlelit dinner that felt moody, intimate and timeless. The warm glow created a beautiful contrast against the historic surroundings and gave everyone space to slow down, share stories and take in the meaning of the day.
Then came the riverboat exit.
Ella and Jack stepped onto the boat as their friends and family cheered from the banks above. Watching them drift away along the San Antonio River felt cinematic and completely true to the setting.
Few exits could have felt more fitting for a Southwest School of Art wedding. It was joyful, unmistakably San Antonio and the perfect conclusion to a celebration so rooted in place and personality.
Every wedding teaches me something new about light, timing and human connection. Ella and Jack’s celebration reminded me why I am continually drawn to documenting wedding days with both film and digital photography.
Their wedding was filled with history in every sense. There was the history held within the limestone walls of the Southwest School of Art, the history Ella and Jack had already created together and the family legacy surrounding them throughout the day.
If you are planning a Southwest School of Art wedding or another celebration in San Antonio, Austin or Central Texas, I would love to photograph it. As a San Antonio and Austin wedding photographer, my goal is to create images that feel beautiful now while preserving the people, atmosphere and emotions that will matter even more with time.
